There’s no mystery ingredients to worry about when you make Homemade Ranch Mix. Homemade seasoning mixes are so easy to make, wonderful to have on-hand, and best of all, you’ll know exactly what’s in it.

By making your own homemade ranch seasoning mix, you’ll avoid all those scientific words in the ingredients. The majority of the ingredients are probably in your spice cabinet right now. Plus you’ll no longer have to skip a recipe you might want to make because you don’t have a packet as a pantry staple.

For those outside the US who can’t find a ranch locally, this is the perfect way to make your own.

Use this homemade ranch seasoning recipe to make a delicious dip, perfect for dunking our Fried Green Tomatoes or Buffalo Chicken Crescent Rolls right into, not to mention all veggie trays. We also use this ranch mix in our Crack Potato Soup, or Crack Chicken recipes.

Key Ingredients

Ingredients for homemade ranch mix on a table.

From the spice cabinet, you’ll need freeze-dried chives, dried parsley, and dried dill weed for the delicious herb base of the mix. Garlic powder, onion powder, white pepper, and salt for its seasoning layer. Buttermilk powder is what adds the creaminess and the tang to ranch dressing. Finally, there’s a little bit of sugar to keep that tang balanced. The full recipe is in the recipe card below the images.

How to use Homemade Ranch Mix

Ranch mix is used in so many recipes! Now that you’ve created your own homemade mix, here are the ways you can use it up!

  • Dressing — mix 2 tablespoons of the seasoning mix with 1 cup of mayonnaise and 1 cup of milk or buttermilk. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if desired.
  • Dip — combine 2 tablespoons of the seasoning mix with 16 oz of sour cream for a delicious thick and creamy ranch dip.
  • Packet substitute — for any recipe that calls for a packet, use 2 tablespoons of your homemade mix.
  • Flavor enhancer — toss your favorite vegetables or potatoes with some olive oil and the seasoning mix then roast like normal.
  • Marinade — mix the ranch seasoning with olive oil and lemon juice and use on chicken, pork, or fish. Marinate for at least 2 hours for best results.
  • Baked goods — add a tablespoon or two to biscuit, roll, or bread dough for a savory twist.
  • Snack seasoning — sprinkle the ranch seasoning over freshly popped popcorn, or homemade potato chips. Add some to onion ring batter. Also great when roasting chickpeas. Use in your own homemade Chex mix.
  • Gift Idea — package the seasoning mix in decorative jars for friends and family for holidays, hostesses gifts, teacher appreciation, or any special occasion.

Recipe FAQs

How long will this homemade ranch mix last?

If properly stored in an airtight container, in a cool and dry place, it will last for 6 months.

Can I use fresh herbs instead of dried?

Unfortunately no. Fresh herbs contain moisture and will go bad, ruining the mix.

My jar says dried dill, is it the same as dill weed?

Yes, they are the same thing. Some brands use dill and others label as dillweed.

Where do I find buttermilk powder?

In the baking aisle of stores like Walmart or Kroger. Saco is the brand most common in stores. You can also find it on Amazon.

Can I use powdered milk instead of powdered buttermilk?

Yes you can, use the same amount as called for in the recipe but when used, it won’t have that slight tang that’s associated with creamy ranch dressings.
