Why you should try these buffalo chicken crescent rolls
Whether you’re the host or need something to take to a potluck or other gathering, having a quick and easy appetizer is a must. Instead of going with the classic yet boring fruit and veggie tray, give this game day flavor favorite a make-over into handheld rolls.
Rotisserie chicken mixed with cream cheese, Frank’s red hot sauce, and shredded cheddar cheese stuffed into crescent dough make these Buffalo Chicken Crescent Rolls an easy and perfect potluck appetizer.
These delicious buffalo chicken bites call for only five ingredients. You probably already have many of them on hand. If not, they’re easily available at your local grocery store. Keep reading to see just how easy these are to make!
Recipe Ingredients
- Rotisserie Chicken: Using rotisserie chicken not only adds to the flavor but also removes an extra cooking step. You can find pre-cooked rotisserie chicken in the deli section or near the checkout in most grocery stores.
- Frank’s Red Hot Sauce: This is a classic hot sauce that has a nice flavor that’s not too hot. It’s typically my go-to sauce but you can use your favorite buffalo sauce.
- Crescent Rolls: You’ll need at least three 8-ounce cans of refrigerated crescent roll dough. Pillsbury is usually my go-to choice. They are thick and I don’t have to worry about them breaking easily.
- Cream Cheese: Philadelphia is my favorite brand but any brand will do. Be sure to set it out ahead of time because it’s easier to create the cream cheese mixture if its softened.
- Cheese: We love the tanginess of sharp cheddar cheese. We do not recommend buying pre-shredded cheese, sure it’s easier but it tastes a bit different and doesn’t melt as well.
Step-by-Step Directions
Step One – Add the shredded chicken, cream cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, and hot sauce to a large bowl.
Step Two – Mix cream cheese and everything together well then set it aside.
Step Three – Pop the rolled dough out of the can and separate it into triangles. Then on a clean surface, cut each crescent dough triangle in half. Put about 1 heaping teaspoon of chicken mixture filling onto the wide part of the dough.
Step Four – Roll the triangle up as tightly as possible.
Step Five – Lay the rolled crescents on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
Step Six – Place the cooked buffalo chicken crescent rolls on a serving platter and watch them become a big hit.
How to serve
- These golden brown buffalo chicken bites pair perfectly with a variety of dips such as ranch dressing, blue cheese dressing or a dip made from ranch seasoning mix.
- As for sides, you can’t go wrong by serving these bites with baby carrots, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, or other fresh veggies like sliced bell peppers.
- If you are planning on serving other appetizers, these delicious rolls can be piled on a plate and served as is.
Variations
Who doesn’t love buffalo chicken? These buffalo chicken crescent rolls are delicious but if you want to take them to the next level, here’s how:
- Brush each roll with melted butter just before you pop them in the oven to bake for an extra buttery flaky bite.
- Spread a thin layer of blue cheese crumbles over the chicken mixture before rolling them up.
- After brushing with melted butter, sprinkle a little bit of shredded cheese over each rolls before baking.
Recipe FAQs
Yes! To get the rotisserie flavor, you can use a chicken spice rub or simply sprinkle some onion powder or garlic powder onto the chicken. Make sure canned chicken is thoroughly drained.
Not necessarily. These are actually really good whether they are served hot, warm, or at room temperature.
You can add them to a crockpot and set it to a warm setting. It’s best to only leave it on for about an hour so they don’t cook, burn, or dry out.
Place any remaining bites and/or any leftover filling in an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to 4 days. These make a great next-day snack.
